Lot Essay

The survey includes interior and exterior works of art and architectural sculpture, mostly taken of models or unfinished, uninstalled works, with the exception of the bronzes shown uninstalled but finished. In his 1868 prospectus to clients, Durandelle made reference to the legal imperative that his specialty, photographic documentation of construction or "works-in-progress", would have for both architects and engineers.

Today, his reputation is founded on this comprehensive documentation of the Paris Opera.
