Lot Essay

In Volume IV Notes to the Plates, Szarkowski comments: (This image) demonstrates Atget's ability near the end of his life to condense and intensify what was already simple and strong. The mannequin in the middle is a newer model than those that flank her; she is cooler and more independent, and less obviously eager to please.
This print was originally in the collection of Julien Levy and mounted for a show at the Weyhe Gallery in New York.
