In 1986 Penn traveled to Prague while in Europe. He visited the Narodni Museum and saw their collection of mammal skulls. Struck by the power of the forms he hired a Czech photographer as an assistant and photographed at the museum, producing a body of stark, elegant and provocative photographs.
