Engine: four cylinder, 1,496cc, Rootes supercharger; Gearbox: ENV preselector; Brakes: four wheel drum; Suspension: quarter elliptic.

The landmark in the history of the Riley was the famous Nine introduced in 1929. Its engine was the classic twin high camshaft with hemisperical combustion chambers, a design which characterised Riley engines for the next thirty years. The engine was later developed in six cylinder form and contributed much to the success of ERA racing engines, and therefore British prestige. Riley themselves also achieved sporting success and throughout the thirties was a sporting name to be reckoned with.

The chassis of this particularly fine Special originates from a 1930 Riley Monaco and was converted into a special in around 1950. The original engine was replaced by a 1934 1½-litre 12/4 engine which was then supercharged in 1962. An early photograph depicts the car racing in a VSCC race with a different style nose cowl. Over a long period of years the car was fully rebuilt and has hardly been used since completion. Features include a preselector gearbox with left hand change and a 1936 ENV rear axle with radius rods and open propshaft. The fully rebuilt engine is running on Methanol and breathes through a C-type sand cast 2" SU carburettor, the Rootes blower (which was new last year) runs at 10psi and the engine is running on a 7½:1 compression ratio which delivers approximately 140bhp on the rolling road. The engine turned dash board holds a large offset rev counter, original Riley oil and water gauge and boost and pressure gauge. The steering wheel is cord bound and the pedals have been drilled for lightness. It has 12" hydraulic lockheed drums and has a good set of 6.00-16 Dunlop tyres. It has a self starter fitted which is powered by a remote slave battery.

It is clear from a close inspection that a great deal of thought, time and effort has created this Special. Whilst it may not be an ERA beater it offers a wonderfully cheap way of entering VSCC circuit/sprint and hill climb events at a very modest cost. It certainly has plenty of style, power and is very much built in the tradition and spirit of the famous racing Rileys and ERAs. It comes with a VSCC blue form.
