KIPLING, RUDYARD. Autograph letter signed ("Uncle Rud") to his goddaughter Ursula Stanley (later Holden), addressed as "My very dear little Ursula" Bateman's, Burwash, Sussex 21 December 1931. 2 pages, 8vo, on both sides of a sheet of his imprinted stationery, fold creases.
[With]: A photograph of Ursula as a baby being held by Kipling, his wife Carrie at his side; a 1994 letter of Ursula Stanley Holden giving the background of the photograph and telling of her visits as a child to her godfather Kipling's home, Bateman's; and two newsclippings regarding Kipling and Bateman's, one annotated by Holden. A CHARMING LETTER TO HIS GODDAUGHTER. "I have just got your note book with the boat drawn on it; and it's put on my table so that I can write in it notes of things about my stories that I want to remember. My table is full of odds & ends of papers but the red and blue cover of the 'Notes' is different from them...Our new dog Michael is one of the funniest creatures I have ever seen. And he knows he's funny. He walks about on his hind legs... When he wants me to get him his ball. Please give my love to your Mommy & Daddy..." (5)
