Lot Essay

Apparently written by a citizen of New York serving in the 111 Regiment under Lieutenant George Brown, who was present at the battle of Gettysburg. There are diary entries, not captioned on a dayly basis, on which a report on the weather figures prominently, scattered references to military engagements and entries about his time in hospital, which includes a visit by Mrs. Lincoln Oct. 5th. The report about Gettysburg reads, in part: 1 July: "Stay within a short distance of Gettysburg tonight." 2 July: "battle today. Make a charge on a battery or more properly to recover a battery of our own. In this charge Lieut Provens is instantly killed..." 3 July: "An awaful battle today. Our Co loose 10 men killed 16 wounded 8 missing. This day I shall never forget it seems to me." 5 July: "This morning no signs of the Rebel Army to be seen..."
