Of oval form, on oval spreading foot, with gadrooned rims and bifurcated sweeping reeded side handles, the domed cover chased with a band of similar gadrooning below an openwork foliate finial, the body engraved on each side with a coat-of-arms within ribbon and laurel swag mantling, the cover engraved on each side with a crest, marked under base and on cover, engraved EH-53.1, and with Dallas Museum of Art accession number 1987.106.a--length over handles 16 1/4in. (41.2cm.)

Lot Essay

The arms are those of Vyner impaling those of Carter, as borne by Robert Vyner of Gautby, Lincolnshire, born in 1717. He married Eleanor, daughter of Thomas Carter of Redbourne and died in 1799. His grandfather, Thomas Vyner, succeeded in 1688 to the estates of Sir Robert Vyner, the celebrated goldsmith and banker.
