A PAIR OF GEORGE III SILVER SAUCE TUREENS AND COVERS
LONDON, 1809, MAKER'S MARK OF BENJAMIN SMITH II & JAMES SMITH III

Each of oval form, on spreading oval foot chased with a dentilated band, with tied reeded rim with grape clusters at intervals above a band of ovals, the tied foliate scroll reeded handles issuing from lion masks, the domed cover with fluted oval pedestal supporting a reeded foliate double scroll loop handle, the body engraved, on each side, with an Earl's armorials, the cover engraved, on each side, with a crest within the Order of the Garter surmounted by an Earl's coronet, marked on bases, covers, and finials, engraved EH-164.1 and .2, and with Dallas Museum of Art accession numbers 1987.213.1a, b and 1987.213.2a,b--length over handles 8 3/4in. Lot Essay

The arms are the same as those on the preceding lot. These sauce tureens form part of an extensive dinner service made for the Earl of Lonsdale, bearing the maker's marks of Scott & Smith and Paul Storr, which comprised lots 40 through 58 in the 1947 sale.
