Messrs. Japy Frères, who began their partnership in 1837, gained medals at various internationl exhibitions held in London and Paris in the mid-nineteenth century. The romantic scene in the Indies recalls the contemporary popularity for the novel Paul and Virginie, which also inspired Dufour's scenic wallpaper in the 1820s.
