Lot Essay

William Alexander Louis Stephen Douglas-Hamilton succeeded his father at the age of eighteen, becoming the 12th Duke of Hamilton and the 9th Duke of Brandon on 15 July 1863, the same year that Dantan exhibited the present bust at the Paris Salon (no. 2320). At the same Salon, Dantan also exhibited a bust of Mary Hamilton, the dowager Duchess.
