Lemoisne records some fourteen pastel studies of 'Danseuses Russes' (op.cit., nos. 1181-1194) and refers to them as a troupe of Russian dancers who performed in national costume at the Folies-Bergères in 1895 (even though Lillian Browse Degas Dancers, London, 1947,
pp. 412-413) suggests that they might be dancing the Hopak from 'Le Festin' performed by Diaghilev's company when it first visited Paris in 1909)
