Although all Baule style figures are known for their elongated forms, this fine carving carries the expression to an elegant extreme. Everything about it, from the thinned limbs, the extended torso and neck, the beautifully conceived fingers and thumbs, the fine oval shape of the head, and the long beard and braid lend to it a rare grace even for one of West Africa's most classical aesthetic statements.
George Preston fully recognized these qualities when he chose the figure to be included among the masterpiecces of Africa which he selected for his recent book. About it, he writes in part: "The intricate scarification marks on the face and body and the tightly braided beard and hair separated from the forehead by a minutely detailed fillet are all details of personal cosmetic choices that are long out of fashion (1991, p. 90.)."
