A FINE AND UNUSUAL IGBO MASK
LEJA VILLAGE
A male sub-group of the north central Igbo region. With sharply pointed nose, slightly opened mouth, pierced slit eyes, horizontal ears of concentric arcs, scarifications at temple and below eyes, a row of small cylindrical elements hanging vertically from forehead, elaborate superstructure with large Janus head at center having long cylindrical neck with necklaces, four smaller heads interspersed with four seated figures holding standing children on their knees, alternating with staffs with hornbill heads and monkey figures climbing up the shafts, colored cloth attached to chin of mask, red and white pigment.
