Lot Essay
The present lot appears in the manuscript catalogue of Jullienne's collection, where room views of the collection are executed in watercolor, in the Pierpont Morgan Library, New York. It can be seen hanging on a door next to paintings by Wouwermans and Rubens (Catalogue des Tableaux de M. de Jullienne, p. 68, no. 139; acc. no. 1966.8).
Two preparatory drawings for the present lot are known. The first, a pen and ink drawing of the whole painting but with a slightly different composition, is in the Museum der Bildenden Kunste, Leipzig (Sahut, op. cit, no. 339). The second, a sanguine drawing of the sleeping soldier, is in the Louvre, Paris (Sahut, op. cit., no. 340).
There are a number of painted copies, some larger and some in the opposite sense (see Sahut, loc. cit.)
