Nearly all of Mayer's paintings are Italian views which display a prominent inscription at the bottom edge. He also executed a number of drawings between 1776-1792 for Sir Robert Ainslee, the English Ambassador to Constantinople. As the inscription indicates, the view is of the Port at Brindisi and is taken from the opposite hill where the home at right is traditionally said to be that of Virgil
