Lot Essay

We are grateful to Professor Roger Rearick for confirming the attribution to Gerolamo Bassano having seen the painting in the original in 1989. According to Rearick, Gerolamo executed a sequence of four (possibly six) canvases around 1584-85 under the direction of his father, Jacopo Bassano. Although Jacopo's participation was modest, these compositions provided his youngest son with a repertory from which to work. The original design for 'The Entombment' is in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna. One of approximately six versions, Rearick believes the present painting to be a late repetition dating from 1594-95
