A PAIR OF LOUIS XVI ORMOLU-MOUNTED AND PATINATED BRONZE EWERS

In the manner of Claude Galle, each with overscroll spout cast with a grotesque mask above an ovoid vessel fitted with engine-turned banding enclosing entwined serpents and hippocampi, the handles cast as a winged scantily clad maiden, the base fitted with pierced anthemion, above a similarly fitted socle and square plinth (regilt)-24in. A related pair of ewers attributed to Claude Galle are illustrated in H. Ottomayer and P. Pröschel, Vergoldete Bronzen, 1986, vol. I, p. 364. Other examples are in the Württembergisches Museum, Stuttgart.
