Lot Essay

Mrs. Elizabeth Ross Newbold (1788-1860), the daughter of Thomas Ross and Mary Thomas, married Philadelphia importer, Caleb Newbold (1782-1852), in 1808. Of the the three sons of Caleb and Elizabeth Ross Newbold, four-year old Thomas Ross Newbold (1809-1858) is the child depicted in this double portrait. This may have been the painting exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia, 1813, no. 186 as Lady and Child.
