In a letter dated February 25, 1879, to Rev. Houghton, the artist explains: "...A Summer Shower was not a literal view but was suggested by a rustic bridge near Scotch Plains in New Jersey, and is a truthful 'impression' of the scene rather than a 'view'." This letter is attached to the reverse of the painting.
