Lot Essay

Caroline Stehlin began her artistic training in 1900 with William Merritt Chase in New York and later enrolled in both his Shinnecock Summer School and European summer classes. She exhibited widely at the Penssylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and National Academy of Design. Stehlin was infatuated with relationships of tone and color and incorporated the bravura of Chase with the subtle tonalism of Whistler in paintings such as this one.
