Lot Essay

The life-size patinated plaster model of 'The First Funeral' (now at the Dépot de la Ville de Paris), won the Medal of Honor at the Salon of 1878. The State then commissioned a marble for the Hôtel de Ville (now in the gardens of the Institute Psychiatrique) which was exhibited at the Salon of 1883 and the Expositions universelle of 1889 and 1900.
The popular group of Adam and Eve carrying Abel was an allegorical representation of the lives lost during the Franco-Prussian war. Bronze editions were cast by several foundries--the bronzes by Thiébaut Frères were made between 1878 and 1885.
