A RARE MASSIVE TANTRIC BRONZE FIGURE OF AVALOKITESVARA
MING DYNASTY
Shown seated in dhyanasana, wearing a dhoti secured by beaded chains around the waist and falling in crisp folds around the lower body, the borders incised with lotus pattern repeated on the shawl draped over the shoulders, the celestial scarf wrapped around the arms falling to and over the edge of the lotus base, the primary hands held before the chest in vajra-anjalikarmamudra and a subsidiary pair held in the lap in dhyanamudra, the remaining eighteen pairs of arms fanning out from the shoulders and each hand either holding an attribute or positioned in a mudra, the nineteenth pair of hands raised to hold a lotus platform above the four tiers of heads of Bodhisattva, the two upper tiers comprised of one head only, the two lower tiers of four heads, all of these surmounting the primary head which also shows four faces, one of which is that of a boar and the other possibly represents Acala with flame-like brows, most of the heads have a third eye, traces of gilding and pigment, firing cracks, some losses--26in.
