A RARE JADE AND CARNELIAN AGATE MASSAGE INSTRUMENT

The tapered white jade handle pierced for the attachment of a tassel at one end and carved around the sides with the wufu flitting amidst clouds, the roller portion formed by five carnelian disks carved in low relief with C-scrolls separated by four smaller white jade discs and flanked at the sides by two green jade caps, all revolving on a rod socketed into a gilt-metal frame--8in. (20.3cm.) long

Three similar massage instruments are illustrated in Daily Life in the Forbidden City, 1988, fig.294, where it is noted that massaging instruments of this type first appeared during the reign of Qianlong and that they were kept in the palace of the empress and imperial concubine and used for massaging different parts of the body
