Of rectangular form, the slender square corner posts joined by the plain top and three shelves, the second shelf framed by the top of a row of two drawers, the bottom shelf above a plain humped stretcher--74in. (188cm.) high, each shelf 19 x 41in. (48.3 x 104.1cm.)

Lot Essay

A similar stand is illustrated by Wang Shixiang, Connoisseurship of Chinese Furniture, 1990, vol. II, p. 140, D3. In volume I it is suggested that the lightness of construction makes the piece more "suitable for display than for use as a bookcase"
