NEOLITHIC, LONGSHAN CULTURE, CIRCA 2500 B.C.

Of broad pear-shape, the thinly potted sides shallowly carved with a broad band of vertical grooves interrupted by a strap handle and set below a single bowstring border, all below a waisted neck and flared mouth rim, the flat base impressed with fabric weave, rim chip--5¼in. (13.4cm.) high

Compare a black pottery vessel of similar form and size, but lacking the vertical grooves and with the handle applied higher on the body, excavated at Rizhao, Shandong, and dated late 3rd or early 2nd millennium B.C., illustrated by Watson, Pre-Tang Ceramics of China, 1991, p. 68, no. 26b

The result of Oxford thermoluminescence test no. 666j89 is consistent with the dating of this lot
