NEOLITHIC, DAWENKOU CULTURE, CIRCA 3000 B.C.

The rounded body of triangular section raised on three elongated conical legs, applied around the sides with a 'rope-twist' band which terminates at the base of the arched, strap handle, decorated on top with deep parallel scoring and arched to join the neck below the everted rim which continues into an up-thrust spout, restored--10 3/8in. (26.4cm.) high

Lot Essay

The kui is a characteristic vessel type in the Dawenkou and Longshan cultural remains. This example is very similar to kui found in burials of the Dawenkou excavated at Dawenkou and Xixiahou in Shandong province; Shandongsheng wenwu guanlichu and Jinanshi bowuguan, Dawenkou, Beijing, Wenwu Press, 1974, pl. 78; and Kaogu xuebao, 1986, no. 3, pl. 9

The result of Oxford thermoluminescence test no. 666j88 is consistent with the dating of this lot
