A LARGE CHANGSHA EWER
TANG DYNASTY

The oviform body applied with three impressed designs below the pair of ribbed lugs on the shoulder and the short, faceted spout set opposite the ribbed handle, two of foliate design, the other a Buddhistic lion seated on a drum, all splashed in an olive-brown glaze reserved against the transparent, crackle-suffused glaze of olive tone which covers the vessel, some glaze degrading, repaired--9in. Compare the Avery Brundage Collection example, illustrated by D'Argence in Chinese Treasures from the Avery Brundage Collection, Asia Society, New York, 1969, no. 68, catalogued as yue type and dated to Five Dynasties or early Song, 10th century. A ewer from this group was excavated in 1958 at Wa-ni-tian near Changsha, Hunan province, and included in the exhibition, The Genius of China, 1973-1974, Catalogue no. 290, dated 9th century
