Lot Essay

The painting on these plates is by more than one hand although all of the scenes appear to be after engravings by William Samuel Howitt, published in The British Sportsman, in 1812. For similar examples see John Twitchett, Derby Porcelain, pl. 67 for a two-handled vase painted by William Cotton; the service, from the Collection of Mr. and Mrs. John E. Treleaven, sold Sotheby's New York, October 13, 1990, lot 53; and the service from the Estate of Shirley C. Burden, sold Sotheby's New York, October 27, 1992, lot 302.
