In 1718 Austria ceded Sardinia to the house of Savoy in exchange for Sicily, and King Victor Amadeus of Savoy and Piedmont took the title of King of Sardinia. He abdicated in 1730 in favor of his son Charles Emmanuel III, who added to his territories during his 43-year reign.
