GREENE, NATHANAEL, General, Continental Army. Autograph letter signed ("NathGreene") to "The Honble. Nicholas Cooke Esqr., Governor and Commander in Chief of the State of Rhodes [sic] Island," "CAMP NEAR VALLEY FORGE," 24 January 1778. One page, folio, integral address leaf with panel in the hand of an aide, remains of red wax seal, small seal hole, but in very fine condition, with untrimmed edges.

"This will be handed you by Abraham Lott Esquire a Gentleman of fortune and family belonging to New - York. I beg leave to recommend him to your particular notice. I can assure you his acquaintance will [be] worthy your cultivation. He lives in New - Jersey. His politeness and hospitality has endeared him to all the Officers of the army...."
Letters written from Valley Forge during the famous winter encampment of the Continental Army (19 December 1777-18 June 1778) are of great interest and have become correspondingly rare. A letter from Elias Boudinot, Washington's Commissioner of Prisoners, dated 1 January 1778, was sold here recently (Christie's, sale 28 November 1992, lot 213, $38,500).
