HOOVER ON THE RARITY OF MODERN HANDWRITTEN PRESIDENTIAL LETTERS

Five months after leaving the office of President, Hoover responds to a collector's frank inquiry about the relative rarity of contemporary Presidential autograph letters. "I doubt whether Presidents will ever again have the time to write long hand letters. Therefore collectors will need to adapt themselves to the typewriter with signatures only...." Only a single Hoover autograph letter of Presidential date has been sold at auction from 1970 to 1992, according to American Book Prices Current (that letter brought $15,400 in 1989.)
