A kindly reply to a request for advice about surgery. Senator Kennedy had undergone spinal surgery in New York in November 1954 and had been near death (on two occasions he received last rites). It was during that convalescence that he began work on Profiles in Courage. "Thank you for your letter. Situations vary so much that is it impossible for me [to] give you any real help in your present problem. The Hospital of Special Surgery is a fine hospital - and so are many others - & you must accept your own judgement, and that of the doctors in whom you have confidence. I hope things go better for you...."
