A letter of introduction to Quincy (1772-1864), Boston's great municipal reformer and future President of Harvard, the only son of the famed patriot of the American Revolution. Lafayette "very particularly" recommends to Quincy his "young friend Duke de Montebello son to Maréchal Lannes, a celebrated French general, personally attached to Emperor Napoleon yet a declared Republican, who fell gloriously at Wagram and has left a numerous family of which the Bearer of this letter is the eldest member. He is a sensible, well informed, and noble minded young man, well calculated to profit by his visit to the U.S..."
