THREE WEEKS BEFORE HIS ASSASSINATION, LINCOLN GIVES PERMISSION TO CROSS THE FRONT LINES

"Allow the bearer, Mr. Wiley, with ordinary baggages, to pass our lines, South and return."

Written in the final phases of the war. On the same day, in an interview with the Baron de Stoeckl, Lincoln had expressed his belief that the war would be over within the year. Mr. Wiley has not been identified.
