Engraved document signed in full as President, countersigned by Secretary of the Navy Gideon Welles, Washington, D.C., 30 June 1864, one page, large folio, ON FINE PARCHMENT, elaborately engraved and accomplished in manuscript, orange paper seal of the United States at bottom center, finely engraved with bold heading "The President of the United States," beneath which an American Eagle against a marine landscape, at the bottom a large vignette of Neptune and his chariot, a sailing ship and reclining sea goddesses with crossed flags, cannons and other naval paraphenalia at bottom, with small legend "American Bank Note Co.," Lincoln's signature quite spotty (apparently due to oil on the parchment surface at the time he signed) a few tiny holes at fold, accomplished in manuscript, appointing George R. Martin an Assistant Paymaster in the Navy; Autograph note signed ("A. Lincoln") as President, Washington, D.C., 27 November 1865, one page, six lines plus signature, in pencil, on verso of a letter from J.M. Scovel to Lincoln regarding the appointment of George R. Martin, with original envelope addressed and franked by John Hay, Lincoln's Secretary, Lincoln tells Gideon Welles: "I know nothing of the propriety of the appointment sought but would be very glad for Mr. Scovel to be obliged...." -- ANDREW JOHNSON, President.
