EARLY EDO PERIOD (17TH CENTURY), INSCRIBED UNSHO
Configuration (sugata):of flat, wedge section (hira-zukuri) with shallow peaked back (iori-mune); length (nagasa): 8 sun, 2 bu (25.0 cm.); curvature (sori): none (muzori).
Forging pattern (jihada): matsukawa-hada.
Tempering pattern (hamon): o-midare beginning at the hamachi and levelling to a suguba-like pattern with fine komidare, ashi and yo, all of which are executed in delicate ko-nie and increasing in width at a constant level until it reaches the boshi; scattered across the surface are scattered utsuri intermixed with tobiyaki.
Point (boshi): Jizo with long kaeri.
Tang (nakago) shape (keitai): tanago-bara with a slight dip in the back, ubu and with a moist, brown patina; file marks (yasurime): katte-sagari; end (nakagojiri): kuri-jiri; holes (mekugi-ana): two; signature (mei), inscribed Unsho and inside (ura): Tenmu koku fuun saku (A floating cloud made to tell a heavenly dream.)
