George Clifford, 3rd Earl of Cumberland (1558-1605), eldest son of Henry de Clifford, 2nd Earl of Cumberland, succeeded as Earl in 1570. As a Naval Commander he took part in numerous expeditions against Spanish possessions and shipping most of which ended in failure. He commanded a ship against the Armada in 1588 and took a leading role in Court festivals and succeeded Sir Henry Lee in 1590 as the Queen's
champion
