The enamelled reverse of this miniature shows how Oliver Cromwell used the symbolism of classic Rome to promote his position as Lord Protector. The P representing Protector surmounted by the Crown within the laurel and palm leaves were symbols that appeared on designs for the coinage made at this time by Thomas Simon
