Lot Essay

The distinctive central drop of this skirt with the flanking scrollwork is characteristic of furniture from Pennsylvania. A related high chest was sold in these Rooms, The Contents of Craig and Tarlton, on November 5 and 6, 1985, Lot 29. Another example, with deeply carved trifid feet, as on this chest, is signed "Samuel Morris, Joiner of Logtown 8mo. 5 1793," and is illustrated in Schiffer, Furniture and Its makers of Chester County, Pennsylvania, (Exton, PA, 1978), figs. 79-80.
