A GERMAN SILVER GILT TANKARD
maker's mark of Valentin Huetter I, Augsburg, circa 1580

Tapering cylindrical and on moulded rim foot, with caryatid and grotesque mask handle terminating in a bird's claw and with demi female figure thumbpiece and hinged domed cover, the body and cover etcheded with stylised strapwork and scrolls on a matted ground, the base engraved with a coat-of-arms between the initials MH and below the date 1589, marked on base, the foot rim and cover with later control marks - 4¼in. (10.8cm.) high
