Robert Kluth was a Brooklyn-based painter who specialized in painting seascapes and genre scenes. Born in Mecklenberg, Germany, Kluth came with his parents to the United States in 1861. He was a founding member of the Brooklyn Society of Artists. Painted circa 1890, The First Step is typical of portraits of the time of families going about their daily activities in the parlors of their homes surrounded by their favorite possessions.
