Lot Essay

In 1921, Frishmuth conceived The Vine as a small statuette, using René Wilde as her model. Two years later, she decided to enlarge the figure and to include it in a major exhibition of sculpture being organized by the National Sculpture Society. Desha posed for this life-size version which was awarded the Julia T. Shaw prize for the best sculpture by a woman at the 1923 show.
