Lot Essay

Alvord Eiseman dates this work 1912 and states that Demuth executed a series of watercolors of Provincetown and Etretat during 1912-1915. Eiseman discusses this work as being among the finest of that group and in a 'manner close to that of the Fauves in its depth of color and broad brush strokes.' Eiseman further states that this coastal scene is far more contemporary in its vision than other early works and prefigures Demuth's later work.
