Hughes apprenticed in London beginnning in 1847, working for John J. E. Mayall, a daguerreotypist transplanted from Philadelphia. He later moved to Glasgow and returned to London in 1855, returning to Mayall's studio.
The sitters are all apparently from one Scottish family, identified on the reverse of one quarterplate ambrotype.
