From 1906 to 1909, Cramer studied painting at the Karlsruhe Academy of Fine Arts. His approach to art was radically affected by his association with members of the Blaue Reiter group in Munich. In thee1930s in New York, Cramer became a proponent of abstraction, investigating experimental techniques such as negative prints, solarization, multiple exposure and photograms.
