Carrier-Belleuse was one of the first artists to offer a selection of his works in an auction devoted solely to his own oeuvre. The Amazone captive was offered in Carrier-Belleuse's first sale at the Hôtel Drouot on December 26, 1968. A marble example (1 meter high) and a terracotta reduction (70cm. high) were both probably created especially for the auction.
