Each line of the inscription is a four-character poem which reads as follows:

Gang yue du jing (to get strong by reading sutra)
Rou yue du shi (to get gentle by reading history)
Shi sheng er jiang (the stone is hard)
Lan sheng er xiang (the orchid is fragrant)
