A MONUMENTAL PARCEL GILT SILVER CLOCK
ELKINGTON & CO., LONDON, 1857
The rectangular form applied at the corners with four massive acanthus scroll feet with tongue and dart, tied laurel, fluted and beaded borders enclosing panel of diaper work and applied at each corner with a lion's mask, hung with floral garlands, the silvered dial with surround of elaborate cartouche of acanthus and honeysuckle with a strapwork carouche below, with a hinged cover opening to reveal a presentation inscription, the whole surmounted with a finely modeled figure of a seated muse teaching a putto to play a horn; the movement a substantial triple fusée with dead beat escapement quarter chiming on nest of eight bells
The inscription reads: AL SR DR DN A. SERRATOSA TESTIMONIO DE APRECIO Y GRATITUD CLARA JACKSON DE HEBER PETRONA CIBILS DE JACKSON SOFIA JACKSON DE BUXAREO
The clock was presented in 1876 to Dr. Antonio Serratosa y Delgado, a distinguished doctor in Montevideo. Spanish by birth, he had married Elvira Cibils Buxareo, daugher of Jaime Cibils, founder of the Banco Comercial of Uruguay. It is likely that the clock was supplied by the firm of Freccero, jewelers in Montevideo.
