AUDUBON, JOHN JAMES. Letter (text and signature in secretarial hand), with a six-line autograph postscript signed ("J. J. Audubon") to Edward Harris in Philadelphia; London, 26 December 1837, 3 pages, folio, address panel in Audubon's hand. Audubon inquires about fellow naturalists, requests a package of bird skins be sent to him quickly, "for depend upon it, now or never is the period for me to push on to my publication," and explains that "it has become a matter of the greatest nicety to distinguish the slight though positive lines of demarkation between one species of Birds..." He asks Harris to obtain from Nuttall notes on any new species "which he saw on the Rocky Mountains, over those mountains, on the Columbia river and off the coast of our western boundaries..." Some birds to which Audubon has given new names in his published plates have been found to have been previously described, "which I am of course obliged to correct in my letterpress....", not in Letters, ed. Corning -- EDWARD HARRIS. Autograph letter signed to J.J. Audubon "care of R. Havell, Engraver," Moorestown [N.J.], 12 April 1835, 3 pages, 4to, integral address leaf, a long letter regretting that he cannot devote more time to collecting on Audubon's behalf, announcing that he has "engaged the services of Schumo the Indian lad," who he plans to take to the shore "as you are now more in want of water than land birds," and reporting on American politics. On page 3 is Audubon's note of receipt initialled "J.J.A." -- VICTOR G. AUDUBON. Two autograph letters signed to Clarkson Stanfield of London and to Adam Black of Edinburgh; both New York, 27 April 1848, each 1 page, 4to, with integral address leaves, both letters of introduction for J. G. Chapman, an American artist travelling to Europe -- WILLIAM SWAINSON. Two autograph letters signed to Captain John Le Conte, St. Albans and Liverpool, 20 March and 5 August 1827, together 7 pages, 4to, minor fold separations on one letter repaired, praising Le Conte's published papers and seeking exchanges of zoological specimens.
