Lot Essay

The label on the reverse seems to relate to Tongres, a town on the Geer, about nine miles north-west of Liège, the capital of the 'Black Country' of Belgium. The battle is presumably the siege of Liège, 14-23 October 1702, after which the House of Commons declared that John Churchill had 'signally retrieved the ancient honour of this nation.' The Queen of her own accord offered him a dukedom and on 14 December 1702 he was created Marquis of Blandford and Duke of Marlborough.
